Tom Hingley talks Macclesfield Fest, Happy Mondays and playing Manchester

This summer Macclesfield Festival will once again be host to some big names. They have already announced The Happy Mondays, Tom Hingley and the Kar-pets, Shola Ama and The Virginmarys.

Tom Hingley is the ex-lead singer from the Inspiral Carpets best known for their songs ‘Saturn 5’ and ‘This Is How It Feels’. Now he is part of a tribute band but it’s not just any normal tribute band. Tom Hingley and the Kar-pets are a tribute to the Inspiral Carpets.

Hingley explained: “Well I fell out with the Inspiral Carpets so I guess I still wanted to play the songs so I needed my own band.”

Happy Mondays are headlining the festival and this is something that Hingley is very much excited to be taking part in. He said: “It’s a privilege to be supporting the Happy Mondays. We (Inspiral Carpets) did a gig in Valencia in 1989 where they went on at 7 o’clock in the morning and Shaun and Bez fell asleep in the morning and got sunburnt so they were as pink as salmons. I saw the Happy Mondays play at the Hacienda in 1987 when I used to work their so I’m a big fan of them.

“It’s fantastic to be on the same bill as them and something I’m very much looking forward to.”

When asked about whether playing Manchester was important he said: “It’s nice to play in Manchester, it’s a privilege and you always get a great reaction. It can however be like a three ring circus sometimes. On any one night you can have three or four gigs. There’s so much choice. You can have Arcade Fire playing on the somewhere else and then The Courteeners playing somewhere else on the same night.”
